The Ellinikon project, situated on the site of Athens’ former international airport along the Athenian Riviera, represents Europe’s largest urban regeneration initiative. Developers are creating a smart, sustainable city that aims to boost Greece’s national GDP by an estimated 2.5 percent.
Key features of the project include:
- A “15-minute city” concept where residents can access essential services within a short walk or cycle ride
- Greece’s tallest residential skyscraper
- Europe’s largest coastal park
- Advanced Internet of Things (IoT) and automation systems
The project has already attracted significant international investment, particularly from the Middle East and Asia. Notable developments include ION Group’s commitment to establishing a €1.5 billion Global Innovation Campus by 2030, which will host approximately 2,000 professionals from 44 countries.
Construction is currently generating around 10,000 jobs, with projections to create up to 80,000 jobs once fully operational. The project spans multiple sectors including tourism, hospitality, retail, education, and business services.
LAMDA Development, the project’s master developer, emphasizes that The Ellinikon is more than just an urban regeneration project—it’s a statement of Greece’s economic resilience and future potential. As one spokesperson noted, it represents “a new Greece, reborn”.
The development is expected to be completed in phases through 2030, with initial residential and commercial components already under construction.
